Latin I is a basic course in Latin prose and poetry. It does not assume any prior knowledge of the language.
It covers Lessons 1-33 in Wheelock's Latin 6th edition revised. This text has become the 'gold standard' in North America to introduce students to Latin using adapted selections from Cicero,Martial,Caesar,Catullus,Horace,Plautus and Terence.

Students will gain some appreciation of how challenging it is to translate from an ancient language to good idiomatic English while conveying the meaning of the ancient text. There will also be twelve opportunities during the term to work on traditional Latin Prose Composition i.e. translating from English into good idiomatic Latin. By the end of the course students will be able to work independently on translations in both directions. Less attention will be given to etymology. Only the most common derivatives will be cited.

Grading will be based on the following: one third for each of attendance,class participation and assignments(including homework and two short tests).
